Covidien has received clearance from the FDA to market a medical device, called the Mallinckrodt TaperGuard Evac endotracheal tube, created to reduce the risk of postsurgical complications caused by the aspiration of fluids into the lungs. Although complications from pulmonary aspiration are rare, the consequences can be severe, Covidien said.

Covidien received 510(k) clearance from the FDA to market its Leak Compensation software feature for the Puritan Bennett 840™ ventilator system. This option provides continuous levels of mechanical ventilation to patients requiring respiratory support, regardless of the level of gas leakage that might occur in the circuit or past a patient interface device in the clinical setting.

Covidien has announced the global launch of the RapidVac(TM) Smoke Evacuator System — a powerful, efficient device that quietly filters airborne contaminants from the operating room environment. The System, an advance in effective control of surgical smoke, features an ultra low penetration air (ULPA) filter with 99.9995 percent efficiency at trapping particulate matter as small as 0.12 microns. The device’s maximum air flow – how much air can be filtered through the system – is 30 percent greater than that offered by previous models, but it operates quietly, without contributing to the ambient noise in the O.R.

Covidien Ltd., a leading provider of advanced energy-based surgical systems has announced the global launch of its new Evident™ microwave ablation system. Designed to coagulate soft tissue during laparoscopic, percutaneous and open surgical procedures, evident system produces heat through the vibration of molecules of water. Microwave energy is then emitted from the feed point of the radiating part of the antenna. This results in the soft tissue’s coagulation. Evident™, that has received the CE Mark approval, is now the first microwave ablation system to be available worldwide.

Covidien Ltd. has received approval from the FDA to market a surgery kit for use in laparoscopic procedures. Covidien’s SILS Procedure Kits can be used by surgeons to perform the procedures through a single incision through a patient’s belly button. The kit is set for launch this summer.
