An endoscope is an instrument that is used to visualize the interior of a hollow organ, like the intestines. Some parts of the small intestines cannot be viewed through a regular endoscope, but can be viewed through a new technique called Video Capsule endoscopy. This is most helpful for patients where the location of their disease is suspected to be in the small intestine. The major indications for use of this procedure are occult GI bleeding where the source was not found on a conventional endoscopic study, and chronic small intestinal problems such as Crohn’s disease.
