Company Description: CryoLife is a contemporary biological medical device company that, since its founding in 1984, has been focused on the development of implantable biological devices, surgical adhesives, and biomaterials for use in cardiac, vascular, and spinal reconstruction for patients of all ages. Much of the Company's research efforts have been centered on the preservation of human cardiac and vascular cells and tissues, and the development of surgical adhesives that enable cardiac and vascular surgeons to repair and reconstruct complex cardiac and vascular anomalies. In conjunction with the Magdi Yacoub Institute and Harefield Heart Science Centre, Imperial College London, England, CryoLife is sponsoring basic research in the U.K. in the use of mesenchymal stem cells (derived from adult human bone marrow) for the development of new and unique biological implantable cardiac devices that will enhance patients' lives and restore their health. (There is a DVD interview about this technology with Professor Yacoub, FRS, FRCS, in the film section of this website.) Biomaterials research has resulted in the development of a polymer-based hydrogel spinal disc. Human clinical testing was conducted in collaboration with Mr. Douglas Wardlaw, FRCS, a spinal surgeon in Aberdeen, Scotland. The product is awaiting CE Mark approval by the Company's European Notified Body.
